Come on out to the Tavern on the Rail! A unique and special dining establishment on Rt 618 in Fredericks Hall, 5.5 miles east of Mineral in Louisa County, Virginia. The 1837 building, a Nationally Registered Historic Landmark, was restored by owner Melody Bowers. The upstairs offers upscale yet relaxed dining. The downstairs is welcoming and cozy for casual dining or a quick bite. Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday nights.

Upscale Dining in a Casual Atmosphere
This is the place for your intimate get-away. White tablecloths and candles adorn each table in the upstairs dining room. But don’t let the elegant setting lead you astray: both formal and casual attire are equally at home here. Enjoy the eclectic decoration and especially the home cooked entrées. The upstairs dining room seats as many as 80 guests, and is open Thursday through Saturday 5 – 9PM. Reservations can be made by calling in beforehand.
Check out the original store shelving loaded with antique dishes and radios, and other interesting memorabilia. The rest of the space is decorated with tasteful artwork and ceramic figures.
A More Casual Experience
This is the place for a more casual, pub-like atmosphere. The bar is located downstairs. The downstairs dining room seats as many as 24 guests, and is generally open evenings – Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 5 – 9PM. Come watch the football game as you enjoy dinner with friends. Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday night, and can be made by calling in beforehand. Check out the woodwork including the original wood beams in the ceiling as well as the original ice box shown here which is now used for wine storage.
The bar is also located in the downstairs dining area, and has seating for 6 guests, and is generally open evenings – Friday and Saturday, 5 – 9PM. Mixed drinks may of course be served in any dining area anytime the Tavern is open. Check out the original woodwork on the carefully restored bar done by Robert Stanley (Melody’s father)!
Enjoy The Evening Breeze
Enjoy your time outdoors in the fresh country air, adjacent to the downstairs dining area. The patio dining area seats as many as 25 guests, and is generally open evenings in good weather – Friday and Saturday, 5 – 9PM. Reservations can be made by calling in beforehand.
Check out the bent rail that was unearthed during the reconstruction of the facility, evidence of Stoneman’s Raid during the Civil War. The occasional guinea fowl or cat may wander by for a visit. And of course you’ll hear and see the train a few yards away if it passes by while you’re there.
